Anyone have imput on this? How do you define a psalmist? I never looked up the definition. Maybe I should. I guy came to my church a few months back and prophesied to me and told me that God was going to take me beyond being a praise and worship leader and that I was going to be a Psalmist. Thanks for your reply. I just realized I posted this in the prayer room. My apologies. JoyCH Guest. Musically inclined psalmists are generally found on church praise and worship teams, the music ministry.
Such psalmists are well-suited to lead praise and worship. They even prophesy at times, sometimes without the audience recognizing the prophetic utterance. A way to discern such occurrences is when they sing impromptu songs, oftentimes new songs because they are divinely inspired, such as in Exodus Consequently, psalmists are prolific writers and singers of songs. This is evidenced with David and the approximately 73 psalms that are attributed to him. It was also apparent in his son and successor, Solomon, who was renowned for his wisdom, which undoubtedly impacted his creations:.
For he was wiser than all men; than Ethan the Ezrahite, and Heman, and Chalcol, and Darda, the sons of Mahol: and his fame was in all nations round about. And he spake three thousand proverbs: and his songs were a thousand and five. And he spake of trees, from the cedar tree that is in Lebanon even unto the hyssop that springeth out of the wall: he spake also of beasts, and of fowl, and of creeping things, and of fishes.
And there came of all people to hear the wisdom of Solomon, from all kings of the earth, which had heard of his wisdom. Unfortunately, many pastors do not always recognize psalmists within their congregations. Sometimes the church suffers when a psalmist is sitting in the pews instead of sitting in front of the keyboard.
Can you imagine getting married and the DJ or band plays songs they like but none of what you want to hear? How much more grievous it is to have a church service with praise and worship that is more appealing to us than it is to the Lord, the head of the church?
Who is praised and worshipped under such circumstances? As a psalmist, David understood how to effectively employ other psalmists for the glory of the God they ultimately serve.
Of Jeduthun: the sons of Jeduthun; Gedaliah, and Zeri, and Jeshaiah, Hashabiah, and Mattithiah, six, under the hands of their father Jeduthun, who prophesied with a harp, to give thanks and to praise the Lord.
And God gave to Heman fourteen sons and three daughters. The name Asaph features prominently in the above Scripture and in the Book of Psalms. He is a noteworthy psalmist who wrote Psalms 50 and 73 to Also, please note that the Scripture above stated that the psalmists prophesied WITH musical instruments. If not, why not? Therefore, he spent time with and had an intimate relationship with the Lord. Such a relationship was bound to produce Godly fruit, such as revelations from the Lord.
The reciprocity of the intimate relationship with the Lord meant He received psalms from David that were like love letters to Him. Just like in a romantic relationship, the most intimate things are never recorded, which is what makes them so intimate. In addition to quality intimate time spent with the Lord, perhaps David is credited with writing so many of the Psalms because he played a musical instrument.
Understandably, we can envision David playing his harp and that led to prophetic utterances, divinely inspired songs to the Lord, his Shepherd. However, for other prophets, sometimes music helped and was even deemed necessary to receive a revelation from the Lord.
You may recall when the kings of Israel, Judah and Edom went to the Prophet Elisha for him to inquire of the Lord for them. Please note of the significance of the musician possibly a psalmist in the process:.
But now bring me a minstrel. After all, are not all psalmists musically inclined? Forthtelling addresses the past and present while foretelling is about future events.
By the way, a stumbling block that prevents some people from recognizing prophecy is when it addresses what the Lord is doing instead of what He will do.
I will not go into the details, but the PAINting has elements from my past. In a manner reminiscent of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, the Lord revealed that I would walk out of the fire unscathed after a period of intense testing. That was good news after being told the devil wanted to sift me as wheat Luke ; he certainly put my faith but more so my patience on trial. Behold, the former things are come to pass, and new things do I declare: before they spring forth I tell you of them.
It is worthy to note that the above PAINting is the first of a series of four, all of which are uniquely prophetically significant. That is reminiscent of how many Christians overlook dreams from the Lord by discounting them as simply being a meaningless dream.
Dreams and visions are revelations that are subject to Biblical interpretation. Some of you have gone through difficult times, and even though you are not a prophet or a dreamer of dreams Deuteronomy , the Lord gave you a prophetic dream. Maybe it was a dream of a field of green grass during a time when your life was chaotic, but you did not understand the dream.
Nevertheless, the partial interpretation of your dream is found in Psalms 23 where David was inspired to write:. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: He leadeth me beside the still waters. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for Thou art with me; Thy rod and Thy staff they comfort me. After they fearfully woke up the Lord, He rebuked the storm and made it disappear Luke Sometimes psalmists share something that seem inconsequential, like how some people view dreams as being insignificant, despite their potential monumental and life-altering importance.
The Holy Spirit used David to accurately describe prophesy what would or would not happen to Jesus while He was on the cross. That prophecy from the psalmist serves as one of the many signs that Jesus was the Christ John Jesus, when He had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost. And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent ; And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose, and came out of the graves after His resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many.
As demonstrated, the Lord communicates with us in diverse manners. When the Spirit of the Lord departed from King Saul, an evil spirit tormented him.
Yet, even though steeped in rebellion, the king felt peaceful relief when David played his harp 1 Samuel Many people are talented, which is sometimes mistaken as an anointing from the Lord when that is far from the case. By no means are these blog posts meant to be all-inclusive. I have much more on my heart concerning all of this than I will share in this post. Your definition may be different than mine, so let me define the context of my definition before I proceed. I am talking about The Worship Leader that most church folk would define as Worship Leader, the person that leads the songs before the sermon on Sunday Morning, Wednesday night or even at small groups.
I also call them Song Leaders, because essentially that is what they are doing, leading others in the singing of pre-written songs with lyrics displayed on a screen or in a book. I want to share this as an encouragement, but some may not see it that way. To tell someone that they are only operating in part of what their potential is can either be received by the recipient as a put down or encouragement to embrace a fuller operation of their gifts and calling.
That said, I believe that most any person that functions as a Worship Leader can also learn to function as a Minstrel. In many churches today they are not. For the most part, The Worship Leader puts together a list of songs to be sung for a worship service.
Here is why I think a Worship Leader, as most define one, is different from the Psalmist and the Minstrel. Most of what the Worship Leader does is lead others in singing revelations that other people had. Songs are essentially revelations that God gave someone that they put to music. I do think it is wrong when people lean solely on the Worship Leader and the pre-written songs to define for them who God is and how they will encounter His nature and character. If we lose our personal discovery because we rely on others to discover for us, we are missing something that God was us to discover in a personal way.
I even had one person comment on Part 1 of this post, and mentioned that Worship Leaders sometimes even function as entertainers! I really thought about what she said, and I understand where she is coming from.
If they are, then we can all agree that they are missing the whole point of what worship is. But what I think happens is that people are so used to having other people generate excitement and revelation for them when it comes to God, that the Worship Leader has to encourage people to the point where it may look as if they are cheer leading the people.
Of course, the goal is to get people to the point where they forget that a leader is even there because they get so caught up in who God is. I could go on and on, but to sum this up: As most define it, a Worship Leader is the person who leads songs other people wrote. They encourage people to sing word written on a screen or from a book. This is a valid function in a church. It does lead people to God, God does enjoy this worship, and people do come into greater depths of understanding of God in this environment.
So why do I point out what everyone already knows as I define what a Worship Leader is? So that I can point out what it is NOT! And what the Worship Leader is not doing is they are not creating what I call neutral atmosphere.
They are not creating time for the Selah. They are not flowing into the function of the Minstrel or atmosphere creator. The Selah is the pause in the midst of the song in which we actually silence ourselves for a period of time long enough to actually let the revelation of what we have been singing actually sink in and become part of us…. I will continue in Part 3… Hey, what we have is good. I just believe that there is a listening side to worship that we, as the church, are not tapping into.
We need to release the anointing and function of the Minstrel in our churches once again…. This entry was posted on January 20, at PM and is filed under Teaching Series with tags heilman , jason , Music , Prophetic , worship.
