Typically, there will be two types of wood used in wood pellets: hardwood or softwood. Hardwood in its raw form burns for longer as it has a higher density. So, what does that mean for your pellet stove? Not a lot. During the pellet production process, sawdust and wood residuals are compressed into pellets, and the type of wood used can either be used consistently, or blended.
Once compressed, both hardwood and softwood pellets end up with a similar density. In its raw form, hardwood is very different from softwood, but once it is compressed, the type of wood does not make much of a difference in heating your stove if you have a quality pellet stove with good air flow. The real thing to look for in your type of pellet is the quality of the wood, ensuring that the pellets you choose are made of real wood, and not mixed with cardboard, bark, or synthetics.
But lead-free pellets are usually lighter than their lead counterparts so wind can have a serious impact on accuracy. This can make shot placement unpredictable at longer ranges. See here for our list of the best lead-free air rifle pellets. At the beginning of the 20th century most, if not all, ammunition for air-powered firearms was in the form of cup-shaped lead slugs.
These were made by a number of manufacturers in various sizes. Airgun slugs were marketed for use in smoothbore airguns , and air rifle pellets were introduced for rifled airguns. They were not fully interchangeable, but pellets dominated the market despite being twice as expensive as slugs. A: Loading airgun pellets backwards is unlikely to harm your barrel but it is not conducive to accurate airgun shooting either.
Pellets that are loaded backwards tend to perform very poorly downrange, and group extremely inconsistently at anything much more than 10m. Slug airgun ammunition can be effective but usually works best with high-power airguns. Skip to content ». Home Guns Ammunition. A magazine of air rifle pellets. There are several varieties of air gun pellets, including slug pellets, diabolo pellets, hollow point, pointed, domed, and wadcutter pellets.
Whether you favor the slug pellet, the diabolo style, or another type of pellet for your air gun, none of these look anything like a BB. This BB gun ammunition is a small, rounded metal ball first founded in It would be quite tough to confuse it with an air gun pellet unless that pellet was squashed down after use. Here, there are more similarities than in design and shape. BBs had an average diameter of 0. Their size has gotten only marginally smaller into the 21st century, with some BBs retailed today at about 0.
Others are even smaller, about 0. The bigger ones have a diameter of 0. Air gun pellets, like other ammunition of its kind, are measured by caliber.
Some are as small as 0. Before we can talk about the respective weights of air gun pellets and BBs, we have to explore the materials used for these types of ammunition.
After all, the material informs the weight. For a long time, lead was the primary material choice for making BBs, and you can still buy these metal balls made of lead today if you wanted to. That said, this metal is not used nearly as often anymore.
This keeps the ammo from corroding, which can happen with pure steel. Moving away from metal, you can also buy airsoft BBs. If you do go the airsoft route, you have two options: biodegradable and non-biodegradable BBs. Designed to be better for the environment, biodegradable BBs can begin disintegrating if mixed with carbon dioxide and water in roughly 47 days, maybe up to 90 days.
They must be kept indoors, ideally at a recycling facility, for this to happen. To break down like this, biodegradable BBs have a polylactide or polylactic acid-base. Both are a type of plastic. Added to the construction of these BBs are starches and corn products. Unlike biodegradable BBs, non-biodegradable BBs will not dissolve no matter how much time you give them indoors or outdoors.
Their acrylonitrile butadiene styrene or ABS plastic base is not conducive to benefiting the environment. What about air gun pellets? What are these made of?
Like BBs, you can sometimes still find lead air gun pellets at gun shops and online. Since the alloy is so soft, processing the pellets is exceptionally easy.
None of the patients in our study after 1 year follow up had any complaints of Acute or chronic lead poisoining. So serum lead levels were not done in patients in our study. Figure 9: Radiographs of a patient showing no difference in the appearance and location of pellets after a follow up of 1 year.

From this study, we observed that the pellets inside human body become engulfed by the fibrous tissue and persist in the body without any change in their form. The pellets need not to be removed from the body unless they produce such a distressing symptom that disturbs the day to day activity of an individual.
There is no risk of lead poisoning for upto one year by the pellets inside human body. Mild local pain can be well treated by oral low dose analgesics and methylcobalamine and gabapentin therapy. So, it can be concluded that pellet injured patients need to be kept in follow-up till they become symptom free and the pellets can be removed only if their presence disturbs with the daily activities of an individual. However, further long tem follow up studies are needed to ascertain the prolonged effects of pellets on serum lead levels inside human body.
