The line that continued to thrive was the ferry from St. George terminal, Staten Island, to Whitehall, Manhattan, the same route that still operates today. There are two bridges off of Staten Island — the Goethals Bridge through New Jersey and the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge through Brooklyn — but the ferry remains the fastest, most direct route to Manhattan.
The Staten Island Ferry boasts a hour schedule. It takes trips every half hour on the half hour, and every 20 minutes during rush hour.
Each ferry has a capacity of around 5, people, and daily ridership frequently tops 70, passengers a day. Emergency responders used the ferries to evacuate attack victims from the World Trade Center and downtown Manhattan. In the wake of the attacks, the Staten Island Ferry only closed for one week before reopening to passengers. For safety reasons, however, vehicle traffic on the ferry was banned. Departing from Manhattan, the first awe-inspiring views will be off the port side to Brooklyn. After about five minutes, the ferry clears Manhattan enough that One World Trade Center also called Freedom Tower makes an impressive debut, and the Hudson River starts to form up the west side of Manhattan.
If you maneuver to the starboard side you can look across the river to gain impressive views of New Jersey. Keep your eyes peeled for all of the activity around the shipyards in New Jersey because you never know what kind of cool freighter might be sailing by.
On the Brooklyn side, you can also see views of the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge , which is one of the longest suspension bridges in the world and part of the NYC Marathon route. Keep in mind that New York Harbor is a salt-water harbor and an extremely active port. They run 24 hours a day and days a year. Without a doubt, the highlights of riding the Staten Island Ferry is the chance to get a quite close view of the Statue of Liberty and the excellent views of the skyline of Lower Manhattan.
When traveling to Staten Island, the Statue of Liberty will be on the right side of the boat. To the best of my knowledge, all ferry boats offer some sort of outdoor space for visitors to enjoy the views.
However, how much space is provided depends on the boat being used and the season. For example, on my November journey, windows were added to enclose more parts of the ship, so the only outdoor space available was the rear deck of the boat. If more than a few people were enjoying the view, it would have been a bit of a challenge to find space.
The interior of the ferry boats varies depending on which boat you are on, but they are all rather utilitarian in their seating options. For amenities, the vessels typically have a small snack bar serving a selection of food and drinks if you want to get a snack while on the water. Avoid large crowds of people all at the forward end of the ferry. Sit spread out as there is plenty of room on the ferries. Help limit the spread of COVID and protect your fellow riders and the crew members keeping the ferries running for your use.
