PTA Program Mission The mission of the Physical Therapist Assistant program at Lackawanna College is to facilitate the preparation of individuals regardless of their socio-economic status, past achievements, gender, national origin, age, race, color or creed, as entry-level, associate in science degree-earning physical therapist assistants.
These individuals will be compassionate and caring lifelong learners who will provide evidence-based ethical treatment to assist the physical therapist in the rehabilitation of all individuals in their care.
The program will strive to provide students with a diverse educational setting allowing for academic excellence and to become socially, culturally, and professionally well-rounded clinicians and individuals who give back to the community. Recognize their own strengths and limitations, interpret for others their scope and function, and understand the need for continued lifelong education and growth. Always demonstrate a commitment to safe, ethical, and legal practice.
Define basic concepts of healthcare and the mechanics of providing healthcare services. Will sit for the National Licensing Examination. The program will enhance the practice of physical therapy in our community by providing opportunities for educational, professional and personal growth.
The program will have a high retention rate. The program will graduate highly qualified and capable students who will represent Lackawanna College and the PTA program. Student Goals Students and graduates will demonstrate professional, legal, and ethical behavior in all academic and clinical settings.
Students and graduates will correctly apply theoretical and conceptual knowledge related to practice as a Physical Therapist Assistant. Students and graduates will competently perform intervention component and data collection skills in clinical settings, and appropriately modify components of intervention within the guidelines of a plan of care established by a Physical Therapist.
Program graduates will be successful in obtaining part-time or full-time employment related to the physical therapy field within 6 months of graduation. The core faculty will maintain contemporary expertise with clinical practice or by attending continuing education courses. PTA Admissions Process and Criteria Admittance into the Physical Therapist Assistant program at Lackawanna College is based on a rolling selective admissions process with an enrollment of a maximum of 18 students per cohort.
The admissions selection process is based on the following criteria and requirements: 1. Links for application forms are available below. Transfer credits must be at least a letter grade of C or greater to meet academic standards. Should a student need one or move developmental or introductory courses based on placement scores, the needed classes would have to be completed prior to entry into the initial academic term for the PTA program.
If not completed prior to the initial academic term, the student would not be eligible to proceed into the PTA program but would be eligible to reapply for the following year. This can be done in one of three ways: The student has completed Biology, Chemistry, or Anatomy and Physiology in high school within the past three years with a passing grade of C or better.
An official high school transcript must be sent to Lackawanna College as evidence of this. The student has completed a three 3 or four 4 credit college-level course eligible for transfer within Lackawanna College in Biology, Physics, Chemistry, or Anatomy and Physiology with a passing grade of C or better.

If neither of the above scenarios applies, a student must enroll in a college-level Biology, Physics, Chemistry, or Anatomy and Physiology course before applying to the PTA program. Employment of Physical Therapist Assistants is expected to grow The goal of the school's program is to help you graduate with the confidence, knowledge, and qualifications to be a Physical Therapist Assistant.
Physical Therapy Assistants play critical roles in helping physical therapists with the rehabilitation of patients—including accident victims, injured athletes, those suffering from burns, strokes, arthritis, and more. This clinical practicum experience provides each student with the opportunity to observe and apply basic skills performed within the classroom while under constant supervision in the clinical setting.
The aim of this experience includes observation of departmental activities including familiarization in delegation while applying basic intervention skills, safety awareness, documentation, communication, and modality application. This clinical practicum experience is a full time 10 week clinical affiliation where students will have the opportunity to experience clinical practice in a minimum of two rehabilitation settings.
Upon completion, the student is expected to achieve knowledge and skills that are required to implement a plan of care under the direction of a licensed physical therapist to improve mobility and function of patients of varying diagnoses and impairments.
Students are expected to perform clinical skills with increasing efficiency as well as implement knowledge learned through ongoing coursework including cardiopulmonary rehabilitation and therapeutic interventions related to prosthetics and orthotics.
The student will attain the ability to provide patient care with quality, efficiency, complexity, and consistency under the supervision and guidance of a physical therapist and reflective of a PTA student progressing toward competency consistent with an entry level physical therapist assistant. Various delivery methods are employed within the didactic portion of the school's program.
Self-discovery methods and problem — based learning supplement standard lecture delivery platforms. In combination, these delivery methods will maximize exchange of information and encourage student initiative in and out of the clinical setting. Throughout the class curriculum, documentation skills will be developed, with emphasis placed on accurate documentation and its relationship to patient safety, practitioner communication, interdisciplinary plans of care, denied reimbursement, and practice acts and laws.
